Ukraine celebrates the Day of Vyshyvanka on the third Thursday of May, which fell on May 19th this year
Fact 1. Ukrainian Vyshyvanka has a long history that dates back more than 2000 years. It served not only as a family decoration but also had important religious and cultural significance for Ukrainians.
Fact 2. Each Vyshyvanka has its unique design, which may vary depending on the region in which it was created. Different embroidery elements had symbolic meanings - for example, the tree of life symbolized well-being and fertility, and diamonds and circles - spirituality and spiritual development.
Fact 3. Vyshyvankas consist of several parts - everyday, festive, and special. Everyday Vyshyvankas usually had a simpler design and were used for work in the fields or at home, festive ones were more ornate and used for holidays, and special ones adorned ranks, costumes, or religious ceremonies.
Fact 4. Ukrainian Vyshyvanka became a symbol of national freedom and the struggle for independence during the Revolution of Dignity in 2014. Vyshyvankas became practically the uniform for protesters and a sign of solidarity with demands for the authorities.
Fact 5. Today, Ukrainian Vyshyvanka continues to be popular, filling the wardrobes of people around the world. It has become not only fashionable clothing but also a symbol of the national idea that embodies our culture and traditions.
